Description
Established on All Saints Day (1 November) 1776 by the revered Franciscan missionary Junipero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano stands as the seventh mission established in California's historic mission trail. The bell wall and its four bells (the two small bells are original & the two large bells are replicas with the originals on display within the mission compound) link the present-day site to the early days of the mission compound. The bells hung in the Great Stone Church prior to the structures collapse during an earthquake. Each day at 9:00 AM the bells are rung seven times to commemorate the mission's place as the seventh mission established in California. Within the mission compound stands Serra's Chapel. Built in 1782, the chapel is the oldest building in California still in use and the only extant worship structure directly linked to Serra leading worship.
